The Miami Suns Basketball Program had a very good showing this past weekend at the AAU Spring Fling 2 at the ESPN Wide World Of Sports in Orlando. Facing some of the best programs from across the State of Florida, the Suns 9th Grade Gold, Suns 10th Grade, Suns White, and Team Fowles all secured #1 seeds coming out of pool play. Suns 10th grade faced off vs the talented Blue Star program in their first bracket play game and fell short of advancing. Coach Truman’s 10th Grade team played very well and looks to be improving every time they take the floor. The 9th Grade Gold and Team Fowles both advanced to the Championship games in their division and faces off against one of the top programs in the Country, Central Florida Elite. CFE controlled the 9th grade Championship game from the beginning, and took advantage of a Suns group that had played in back to back games that morning, for an impressive victory.

In the 17U Red bracket, Team Fowles and CFE played in a highly anticipated battle that featured as many 20 Division one prospects and both teams being ranked in the top 10 of various Summer Team rankings. In a game played in front of as many as four major scouting services from across the country, CFE held on for 58-49 victory over Team Fowles. CFE saw their lead cut to six points with two minutes to go, but got a couple of big stops to hold on for the win. Brittany Dinkins and Aisha Edwards hit some key shots down the stretch for Team Fowles, and Raigyne Moncrief battled through a deep thigh bruise to also play a key roll in the Suns comeback. These two teams are sure to face off again in what should be another great game.

The most impressive showing on the weekend belonged to the Suns White team who swept through pool and bracket play to be crowned Champions. Coach Sam Baumgarten’s team displayed tenacious effort and energy throughout the weekend to bring home the trophy. The Championship game was close throughout the first half, as the second half opened the White team took control and never looked back to capture their first tournament title of the summer.

“I have a great group of kids who practice hard and play even harder”, said Baumgarten. “But more importantly, we put our egos aside for the betterment of winning and representing the Miami Suns Organization.”

The Miami Suns will be back in action on Memorial Day Weekend as all six Suns teams will compete in the Miami Suns Girls Basketball Memorial Day Classic, in West Palm Beach, FL.
